This is a sporadically encountered species in mesic locations
from the upper nemoral and the boreal habitats. We are not at all
convinced in regarding the distinction between this species and
Centaurea pinnatifida Schur. In most of the populations,
the indviduals have appendages of the involucral bracts
with characters from the both taxa while the shape of the leaves is
very variable.
